Between June 1972 to September 1973, the cafe and performance space became the nerve center for the city’s burgeoning underground and counterculture set.

Hadaka No Rallizes, aka Les Rallizes Dénudés, the psychedelic noisemakers originally from Kyoto, was one of the marquee names at OZ. Led by the enigmatic Takashi Mizutani, the now-legendary band was one of the earliest bookings for the venue, and would ultimately close out OZ Last Days, a raucous five-day blowout to celebrate the short but wonderful world of OZ. To commemorate the occasion, recordings made at OZ were released as OZ DAYS LIVE, a private press 2LP set featuring Miyako Ochi, Acid Seven, Masato Minami, Taj Mahal Travellers, and four tracks by the Rallizes—which constituted just a fraction of what had been recorded at the time. For nearly 50 years, these songs remained the only official appearance of the Rallizes on LP—until now.

With The OZ Tapes, we are finally able to hear the missing pieces. Stored on reels of Scotch analog recording tape, these recordings had laid dormant in storage for almost half a century. The previously unheard material reveals the Rallizes at some of their most unhinged and experimental, as well as moments of delicate tenderness—the two sides of Mizutani that would come to define his band’s legacy. Taken as a whole, The OZ Tapes help to demystify the band’s murky history, yet this vibrant and seemingly relatively innocent era only hints at the explosive, uncharted worlds into which Mizutani would lead the band.

CREDITS

Takashi Mizutani - vocals, guitar
Takeshi Nakamura - guitar
Makoto Kubota - bass
Shunichiro Shoda - drums

Recorded at OZ, Kichijoji, Tokyo, 1973

Original recordings produced by Minoru Tezuka and OZ Freaks
Recorded by Kiyohiro Takada (Doronco) and Shigeru Sugiyama

All songs written by Takashi Mizutani © 1973, 2021 by NICHION, INC.
All songs arranged by Les Rallizes Dénudés

TRACKLIST

OZ Days

A Shadow on Our Joy / 僕らの喜びに影がさした

Wilderness of False Flowers / 造花の原野

White Awakening / 白い目覚め

The Last One_1970

Memory Is Far Away / 記憶は遠い

Vertigo otherwise My Conviction / 眩暈

The Last One_1970 (ver.2)

LISTEN

Available on Desktop & Mobile

KEY FEATURES

First-ever release of the legendary 1993 gig

Mixed from the original multitracks by Rallizes member Makoto Kubota

Official recording fully authorized by The Last One Musique

Photos by Takehiko Nakafuji

Liner notes by Shinya Matsuyama

3LPs in a tri-fold jacket with insert

Also available in 2xCD housed in a gatefold wallet

RELEASE DESCRIPTION

In 1991, Les Rallizes Denudes released three full-length albums on CD, the band’s first-ever recordings to be made available since their formation in Kyoto more than two decades prior. The version of “Hibiscus Flower” heard here—hard, heavy, and essentially a new song—is unlike the one included with The Last One (Poésies) lyric book.

Jittoku ‘76 stands comfortably alongside ‘77 Live, capturing the raw energy that has always defined Les Rallizes Dénudés.

TRACKLIST

夢は今日も / Dream Again Today

造花の原野_1976 / Wilderness of False Flowers_1976

白い目覚め / White Awakening

カーニバル / Carnival

氷の炎 / Flame of Ice

夜、暗殺者の夜 / The Night

お前の眼に夜を見た / Saw the Night in Your Eyes

イビスキュスの花 或いは満ち足りた死 / Hibiscus Flower otherwise Dying Satisfied

Enter the Mirror

LISTEN

Available on Desktop & Mobile

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0620/6947/3471/files/850054840288_974x_330d3531-a885-497b-af6a-572887b417f3.jpg?v=1749008475
les-rallizes-dnuds-disque-4-76-studio-et-live-lp
Disque 4 -'76 Studio et Live-

** This is a PRE-ORDER. What no one knew at the time was that Takashi Mizutani was already deep into preparing another record.

Disque 4 reconstructs the track list Mizutani had put together for that fourth album. This includes the single “White Awakening," recorded in 1976 at the studio in Takadanobaba BIG BOX as part of the sessions that would become known among collectors as the “Virgin Demos.” Production and mastering of this archival release were handled once again by Makoto Kubota, assembling the album from the masters left behind by Mizutani, utilizing newly discovered tapes as additional sources.

Prepared by Mizutani using a variety of formats, including U-Matic, open reel, and DAT, the tracks were originally labeled with working titles such as “Disque 4” and “Record No. 4,” indicating that Mizutani intended them for inclusion on a possible fourth album. The recordings were taken primarily from studio sessions that all seemed to have taken place around 1976, which aligns with the claim that Mizutani himself once made that “there exists an album of studio recordings made with the same members as ‘77 LIVE.” His notes also suggest an attempt to sequence the tracks as a vinyl LP, splitting them into A and B sides. It's not hard to imagine that in the era of CDs in the early 1990s, an album on analog LP would have been an extremely difficult sell. Thus, the “Fourth Album” had become another lost piece of the intricate Rallizes myth.

Les Rallizes Dénudés may be notorious for the colossal volume and extended song lengths in their live settings. But this work, centered around studio recordings and condensed onto a single LP record, transcends the common impression of the band’s aggressive flood of noise. Instead, the “lyricism” at its core emerges with striking clarity. And needless to say, this is precisely the charm of the Rallizes that continues to captivate fans worldwide today.

TRACKLIST

黒い悲しみのロマンセ 或いはFalin’ Love With / Romance of the Black Pain Otherwise Falin’ Love With

夜の収獲者たち / Reapers of the Night

夜の風 そして 夜明けのロウソクの炎 / The Night Wind

鳥の声 / Bird Cals in the Dusk

白い目覚め / White Awakening

夜、暗殺者の夜 / The Night

LISTEN

Available on Desktop & Mobile
