It’s in the spirit of this great musical tradition that writer\/director Ethan Hawke and his cast and crew set out to create the first-ever “\u003cem\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eGonzo Indie Country-Western Opera\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e” film, BLAZE.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHawke, an Austin native, understood the jury he’d likely face in making a film about Texas’ own drunken angels, Blaze Foley and \u003cem\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eTownes Van Zandt\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e. An able messenger of this story, Hawke brought in the people that loved them most, including Foley’s partner Sybil Rosen (the film is based on her book Living In The Woods In a Tree…), a longtime friend and bandmate \u003cem\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eGurf Morlix\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e, \u003cem\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eCharlie Sexton\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e (portraying Van Zandt and overseeing music production). \u003cem\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eAlia Shawkat\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e and \u003cem\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eAlynda Segarra\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e (Hurray for the Riff Raff) already knew the words to Foley’s songs and went all in. Finally, songwriter and chef \u003cem\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eBen Dickey\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e was pulled out of the kitchen and placed in front of the camera to portray Foley, a performance by this first-time actor that couldn’t have been played by anyone else.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAs the cameras rolled, the actors began to sing and the singers began to act, and in many ways what’s captured in the film is the spirit of music itself. Instead, he rocked on the sidelines, ultimately touring with Cream and Fleetwood Mac, writing songs for CSNY, and opening for The Rolling Stones on their 1969 tour. More recently, Terry’s songs have been covered by a number of younger artists including the Raconteurs, and his voice can be heard on DJ Shadow’s track “Listen”. This spring he will be touring the East Coast and U.K. Though his “superlungs” would have no doubt served Zepp well, perhaps his solo status allowed him to be more experimental and nuanced than he would’ve been able to be as a mainstream frontman, and for that we are grateful. While you can't give away LPs from such accomplished boogie-woogie piano players such as Albert Ammons or Meade Lux Lewis, Dupree's style of mixing boogie-woogie and the blues seems more modern and hip, attracting music lovers and record collectors alike.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhile just about anything on Atlantic or Blue Horizon is worth searching out, the real goods are to be found on Dupree's very first LP released in 1958 on Atlantic- Blues From The Gutter; the title says it all and the lyrics rarely stray from sex and drugs. Dupree's delivery simply oozes rock and roll, and I'm not talking about music. If the proverbial fire struck and I had to choose five blues LPs to save, this would make the cut. The mono original has a deeper soundstage and more immediacy, which has been traded off for a wider stage with this stereo issue. It's probably my favorite song here. But, \"Broke Blues\" is also exceptional. This one, along with \"Cross Ties\" and \"Blues Roots\", is fairly progressive, drawing as much from post-bop as blues and traditional Jazz, pushing toward avante-garde. By G.
