Also included are two previously unreleased cuts. This release marks the first time many of these songs will have appeared on vinyl; it is also the first-ever vinyl compilation of Mexican New Wave and post-punk. While synth-pop and obscure electronics from Europe and the United States have been extensively documented, much less attention has been paid to such offerings from the periphery. Back Up serves as a vital document of Mexico’s flourishing DIY scene in the 1980s, surveying a wide range of styles and moods. By using home recording techniques, the bands featured here were able to circumvent relying on the expensive studios of the era. Tracks by Avant Garde, Vandana, and Silueta Pálida mine the kind of dreary-but-infectious wave that long-time Dark Entries fans will celebrate. Meanwhile, Volti and Artefacto offer a floor-ready pop sound that has echoes of NY freestyle, with Latin percussion and boxy beats. But darker turns are present as well, with Década 2’s New Beat-inflections and electro experiments of Syntoma and their side project Escuadrón Del Ritmo.

Back Up: Mexican Tecno Pop was remastered by George Horn at Fantasy Studios. From mutant drum machine beats to irresistible synthesizer hooks, fans of the fringes of the 80s will find songs to stir their cold, dark hearts. But Back Up Dos does more than mine retro kitsch; it documents the development of a rich DIY music scene that is still underexplored. As affordable samplers and digital synths spread throughout the decade, post-punk and new wave gave way to more aggressive EBM and cyberpunk sounds. The scene also developed in opposition to the political climate of the times: the rise of the drug cartels and a reactionary turn in national politics. Using home recording techniques, these bands took cues from the electronic wizardry of the Human League and Wax Trax Records while reflecting the vibrant and chaotic Mexican cultural landscape of the era. On Back Up Dos, impeccable pop anthems from Casino Shanghai and Los Agentes Secretos sit alongside gnarled obscurities from Ford Proco and María Bonita, showcasing a decade of sly deviance and enthusiastic experimentation.

This album comes housed in an 80s-inflected neon sleeve designed by Gwenael Rattke and includes a 12-page booklet with photographs, lyrics, and notes. Best known for his chart-topping disco anthems, Cowley left us with an incredible body of work before his tragic death in 1982 due to AIDS-related illness. Since 2009, Dark Entries has been working with Cowley’s friends and family to uncover the singular artist’s lesser-known sides, including his soundtracks for films on compilation albums School Daze, Muscle Up, and Afternooners. From Behind reveals yet another facet of Cowley’s myriad influences; garage and soul. As a tripped-out teenage music freak who arrived in 60’s San Francisco, it should come as no surprise that these psychedelic sounds, both heady and visceral, infuse Cowley’s oeuvre.

Recorded during Cowley’s most productive period, ‘80-’82, these tracks show the master flexing his virtuosity while paying loving tribute to the songs that shaped him. A rough draft of Loverde’s “Iko Iko” contorts the jaunty Dixie Cups classic into a slithering, monstrous bathhouse groover, the song’s signature claps draped in cavernous reverb. An unexpected hi-NRG cover of The Doors’ “20th Century Fox” has Paul Parker on vocals, ironically twisting the original’s overt heterosexuality. Via Cowley’s vocoder, The Who’s “Shakin’ All Over” is transformed into a haunting meditation on the loss of bodily autonomy that AIDS inflicts, while the Moody Blues’ “Ride My See Saw” appears in instrumental, amped up and synthesized for dancefloor impact. We’re also graced with instrumental demo versions of The Seeds’ “Pushin’ Too Hard” and The Electric Prunes’ “Too Much To Dream (Last Night),” which later appeared on Paul Parker releases. Things close out with a swinging version of the Four Tops’ Motown classic “Baby I Need Your Loving”, Cowley later reimagined for R&B artist Carl Carlton. The record comes housed in a sleeve designed by Gwenaël Rattke and includes an insert with photos and liner notes written by Louis Niebur. Arriving on October 19th in celebration of what would have been Cowley’s 74th birthday, From Behind gives us yet another glimpse into Cowley’s world: iconic, erotic, and more than a little cheeky.

TRACKLIST

Iko Iko

20th Century Fox (feat. Multi-instrumentalist Robert Yang has made numerous appearances on Dark Entries for more than a decade, with releases spanning the stylistic gamut from hi-NRG disco floor-fillers to lush ambient epics. Decompose, Bézier’s second LP, is perhaps his most introspective work yet. It is an album almost ten years in the making, a deep investigation of life, loss, and the struggle of knowing oneself. If one were to pull a tarot deck for this album, it would be the Nine of Swords. The album honors the lives of the fallen victims of Pulse Nightclub. It honors lives lost or suffering through the ongoing genocide in Gaza. The title track takes the form of a Buddhist chant, a brooding synth-driven meditation that scales steadily until breaking into John Carpenter-esque arpeggios halfway through. Tracks like “Egg,” “Marionette,” and “A Fading Citadel Atop Black Sand Bluffs” build on this soundworld, one in which intricate melodies and cavernous reverb induce in the listener feelings of both claustrophobia and free-fall. The album’s dancefloor-leaning moments, like “Codebreaking” and “Split a Path Towards the Thicket” are spartan, tunnel-vision techno tracks speeding towards ego-death. Decompose chronicles Yang’s journey to find peace with himself, as a gay Asian American. During this process, they learned to “repot” long-lost parts of their identity so they could grow forth in wholesome fashion. The sleeve for Decompose was designed by Eloise Shir-Juen Leigh, and features a photograph by Frankie Casillo of Robert lying on a bed of rocks in savasana pose, resembling an ascetic, evocative of the monastic vibes of the record.

TRACKLIST

Egg

New Age

Decompose

Peat Moss

Marionette

Rippling

Merciless Timeline

A Fading Citadel Atop Black Sand Bluffs

Pulsate

Split a Path Towards the Thicket

Inner Grace

Codebreaking

Anstrengend

LISTEN

Available on Desktop & Mobile

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0620/6947/3471/files/DE343_Bezier-Decompose-sleeveFRONT-scaled.jpg?v=1777621415
patrick-cowley-muscle-up-2lp
Muscle Up

FEATURES

2xLP pressed on Black Vinyl

Contains an 8x11 glossy promotional “Muscle Up” replica poster with original VHS artwork, plus an essay from Maurice Tani

DESCRIPTION

Dark Entries and Honey Soundsystem Records have teamed up again to release another volume of gay porn soundtracks by San Francisco-based musician and producer, Patrick Cowley. Perhaps one of the most revolutionary and influential people in the canon of disco music, Cowley created his own brand of Hi-NRG dance music, “The San Francisco Sound.” Born in Buffalo, NY, on October 19, 1950, Patrick moved to San Francisco at the age of 21. He studied at the City College of San Francisco, where he founded the Electronic Music Lab. During this time, Patrick, along with his classmates Maurice Tani and Art Adcock, would create radio jingles and electronic pieces using the school’s equipment: first a Putney, then an E-MU System, and finally a Serge synthesizer. He would make experimental soundtracks by blending various types of music and adapting them to the synthesizer.

By the mid-70’s, Patrick’s synthesizer skills landed him a job composing and producing songs for disco superstar Sylvester, including hits like “You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)”, “Dance Disco Heat” and “Stars.” This helped Patrick obtain more work as a remixer and producer. His 18-minute-long remix of Donna Summer’s “I Feel Love” and his production work with edgy New Wave band Indoor Life were both of particular note. By 1981, Patrick had released a string of dance 12″ singles, like “Menergy” and “Megatron Man”. He also had founded Megatone Records and released his debut album, “Menergy”. Around this time, Patrick was hospitalized and diagnosed with a then-unknown illness: that which would later be called AIDS. Throughout 1982, he recorded two more Hi-NRG hits, “Do You Wanna Funk” for Sylvester, and “Right On Target” for Paul Parker, as well as a second solo album “Mind Warp”. On November 12, 1982, he passed away.

In 1979, Patrick was contacted by John Coletti, owner of famed gay pornc ompany Fox Studio in Los Angeles. Patrick jumped on this offer and sent reels of his college compositions from the 70s to John in LA. Coletti then used a variable speed oscillator to adjust the pitch and speed of Patrick’s songs in-sync with the film scene. “Muscle Up” is a collection of Cowley’s instrumental songs recorded between 1973 and 1980, found in the Fox Studio vaults. This compilation also includes bonus compositions found in the basement of Megatone Records owner John Hedges and the attic of former bandmate Maurice Tani. Influenced by Tomita, Wendy Carlos, and Giorgio Moroder, Patrick crafted an electronic sound from his collection of synthesizers, percussion, modified guitars, and hand-built equipment. The listener enters a world of forbidden vices evocative of Patrick’s time spent in the bathhouses of San Francisco. The songs on “Muscle Up” showcase a different facet of Cowley’s work. From an ambient journey through the Amazon, tension builds with the instrumental demo version of the slow-chugging masterpiece “I Need Somebody To Love Tonight”, before things go interstellar with ecstatic space-funk and galactic workouts.

Featuring 75 minutes of music, this compilation contains soundtrack music from two Fox Studio films, “Muscle Up” and “School Daze”, plus additional songs from the same era, never before released on vinyl. The tapes were restored and transferred using the same speed and pitch settings, then remastered by George Horn at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley, CA. Cover designed by Berlin-based artist Gwenael Rattke. Each double album also contains an 8×11 glossy promotional “Muscle Up” replica poster with original VHS artwork plus an essay from Maurice Tani. For Patrick’s 65th birthday, Dark Entries and Honey Soundsystem Records present a glimpse into the futuristic world of a young genius. The Southern-raised, Oakland-based musician and writer has centered his queerness and Blackness in projects Gravy Train and Younger Lovers as well as in his award-winning books 100 Boyfriends and Since I Laid My Burden Down. On No Jack Swing, Purnell gives us a love letter to the most beloved (and secularized) of drum patterns – that is, the electronic 808 “Amen Break”. Beginning recording in 2020, Purnell conceived of No Jack Swing as an audio zine of found sound materials: chain letters of instrumentals recorded in bedrooms, poems from boys in France, found gospel tapes from his childhood family Baptist Choir, and the sound of records skipping on his bedroom turntable. No Jack Swing is as much a homage to No Wave and New Jack Swing as it is an answering to the gods of Indie, Electroclash, Disco, and Gospel. Amidst all this background noise, the unexpected occurs: all the niche pretensions collapse to a singularity – the sound of High Pop! No Jack Swing was produced by Nightfeelings. On sassy titles like "Sex Goddess", "Skin Tight", and "Flirt", Angelyne fused the glam and grit of Southern Californian punk with flashy synth-pop style. This will be the first time that this cult record will be in print since its original release, and comes on pink Corvette-colored vinyl with a 2-sided poster featuring lyrics. Pure Brown Energy was born when San Francisco-based producer and Hard French collective member Brown Angel was faced with a gift and a loss: an original Roland TR-808 was given to them around the same time that their father passed away. To process their grief, they set about making an album that showcased the many facets of their being, in their words: "my gay tío side, my Latin goth side, my cruising down the boulevard side, and most of all my soft vulnerable side." From slamming vogue/ballroom house to cumbia-inflected freestyle, Pure Brown Energy channels club sounds both contemporary and timeless, while centering the most eternal electronic instrument of all: the TR-808. Opener "Miel" grooves with the effortlessness of peak-era Masters at Work or vintage Kevin Saunderson, while "Dame Más" dials up the energy even further. The influences of Miami bass and West Coast electro shine through on "Maya" and "Love Me Right," which pair razor-sharp beats with a flurry of samples culled from Brown Angel's record collection. "PBE" and "En Movimiento" take the Planet Rock vibes to another level, combining influences from contemporary cumbia and reggaeton sounds with Brown Angel's Latin goth flair. Pure Brown Energy brings a sense of urgency to the dancefloor, unreluctantly examining the crossover between creation and loss, between celebration and sorrow. Blues Lawyer was formed in 2017 as an outlet for guitarist/vocalist Rob I. Miller and drummer Elyse Schrock to write pop songs outside of the strictures of their other groups. Following 2018’s Guess Work and 2019’s Something Different, Blues Lawyer had “graduated from being a side project band, a sort of throwaway project, to actually being a legitimate band,” according to Miller. Under the backdrop of global pandemic and existential crisis, they set about recording their new record. Says Miller, “I have always been really attracted to the way we measure time, especially in relationship to our concepts of what we are supposed to have achieved. There’s a lot of different moments on the record where we’re interrogating this whole value system that comes along with it—determining my worth because of where I’m at in my life in relation to my age, in my love life, in my career.”

All in Good Time finds Blues Lawyer moving away from the Flying Nun-influenced jangle pop of their earlier work towards a 90’s alternative rock sound imbued with melancholy of the Lemonheads and Teenage Fanclub. Miller and Schrock agree that this is their first record approached with intentionality, each member having spent their time in pandemic-enforced isolation, honing their songcraft and penning sharp hooks. With the addition of bassist Alejandra Alcala and guitarist Ellen Matthews, Blues Lawyer has become more unabashedly riff-centric, bringing a controlled wildness to the new songs, as evidenced by Matthews’ single-take guitar solo on album closer “Tangled Mess”. This is also the first record on which Schrock and Miller share songwriting duties, with Schrock’s earnest contributions balancing out Miller’s more sardonic approach. Schrock’s optimism particularly shines on the Heavenly-esque “Late Bloomer” as she sings “A late bloom is worth the wait.”. All in Good Time reveals Blues Lawyer as a band ready to stake a meaningful claim in a world that rewards insincerity. For their SoundBaths series, now-defunct poppers brand Double Scorpio commissioned artists to make mixes for an imaginary queer bathhouse. When asked to contribute, San Francisco-based artist Coatshek aka Sheki Cicelsky took the opportunity to create original compositions. The resulting album, Sound Bath, serves as a masterclass in slow and sultry ambient techno. Taking inspiration from Pink Floyd, Manuel Gottsching's E2-E4, and his friends DJ mixes (particularly Nick Moss and Matthew Paul's for "Por Detroit"), Coatshek landed on 107 bpm as the optimal speed for sauna sex. With just a few synths, his Telecaster, and "lots of delays, reverb, and weed," he sculpted stunning cuts like the effortlessly grooving "Softest" and the psych-laced "Triple Virgo." The cover for Sound Bath was designed by Coatshek's fiance Nate Sprecher, and features photographs by Luke Kraman taken at The Ever Afters campout. The album is a lost medieval collection of pagan tunes for private ceremonies. These simple, cyclical layered instrumental rounds owe much to the inspiration of Moondog as well as the efforts of the Penguin Cafe Orchestra and Dead Can Dance. Following 2023's Birds, her ambient and IDM-leaning debut album, Cloud Sight Fade shows Doc drawing on her years of queer clubbing to bring us seven diverse tracks sitting between muscular New York house, Berlin twilight techno, and funky West-coast breakbeats. Production began in the Bay Area and was completed in Berlin; Maristuen says that this work became a love letter to the West Coast's magnificent natural landscape, the light of the Pacific sunrise. While draped in dreamlike textures and melodies, this is also a record about embodiment and the memories that live within our corporeal forms. The powerful grooves on the breakbeat-inflected "Lemon Zest" and the propulsive "Cloud Sight Fade" remind us that dance music is for bodies dancing. Meanwhile, tracks like the sparkling album-closer "Enchanted Static" or the brooding groover "Water Sign" plunge us deeper into hypnotic depths. On Cloud Sight Fade, Doc Sleep guides us through slumber and wakefulness, in and out of our bodies, with the mastery of a seasoned DJ and clubgoer.

TRACKLIST

Proffesor Eucalyptus

Lemon Zest

Palm Reader

C.Echo Azure

Water Sign

Cloud Sight Fade

Enchanted Static

LISTEN

Available on Desktop & Mobile

FEATURES

1x12" pressed on Black Vinyl

DESCRIPTION

Hackney Electronica come to Dark Entries with the Synaptic Shadows EP, featuring 5 cuts of acidic rave-inflected wave. Quinn Whalley (Paranoid London), Unai Trotti (Cartulis Music), and Margo Broom (Hermitage Working Studios) formed Hackney Electronica during COVID era. Trotti and Whalley were spending countless hours digging through records and making music during lockdown. As their sound took shape - heavy and hypnotic - they invited Broom to join, cementing the motley trio. The five pieces on Synaptic Shadows explore themes of altered states, late-night cityscapes, and the fine line between pleasure and paranoia. Each track pulses like a memory from the backstreets of Hackney, where the night transforms the city into an electrified maze of fleeting highs and inevitable crashes. The anxious grooves on "H.E. In 1983, producers Michel Bibeau, perhaps best known for his work on Pluton & Humanoids' "World Invasion," and Fitz Roy aka Ralph Mashats teamed up with singer Elaine Desjardins, the eponymous Misty Lane. Mashats reminisces about bringing his Roland TR-808 and TB-303 to Michel's Studio 21 in St. Eustache, two units he regretted later selling for "a slice of bread." Michel added hooks with his Roland Jupiter 4 and various studio effects. Their sessions produced "Energy" and "Contrôle," two cuts of slinky synthpop with French-Canadian flair. "Energy" pops off with proto-house vibes thanks to snappy 808s and Desjardin's naive-but-enthusiastic vocals, and would fit right into a mid-80s WBMX Radio mix. "Contrôle" is a mid-tempo groover with tropical atmospheres, sitting perfectly next to to Junior Byron's "Dance to the Music," which was another Bibeau production. Vox Populi! was founded in Paris in 1981 by AXEL KYROU, a multi-instrumentalist of Greek, French, and Palestinian roots. He soon recruited his future partner, MYTRA, and her brother ARASH KHALATBARI, who were second-generation immigrants from Tehran, as well as bassist FR6 MAN (FRANCIS MANNE). Their sound was motley, combining elements of musique concrete and early industrial with horns, flutes, and traditional Persian instrumentation. Improbably prolific and ceaselessly divergent, Vox Populi! found their way onto dozens of cassette compilations during the heyday of the 1980s DIY tape music scene, including releases on era-defining labels like Insane Music, Cthulhu Records, and their own Vox Man. Sucre De Pastèque, the band's sixth full-length release, came out in 1986 on Unlikely Records, the cult outlet of Rimarimba's Robert Cox. Like most of Vox Populi's output, Sucre is a scattershot endeavor, encompassing psychedelic dirges, cosmic drones, hypnotic chants, and fractured machine-funk. The mood is understatedly bleak, but Vox Populi's genre agnosticism and curious sense of wonder prevent things from feeling oppressive or heavy-handed. The cover for Sucre De Pastèque was designed by ELOISE SHIR-JUEN LEIGH, and features a collage by Vox Populi member Fr6 Man. Each copy includes an insert with photos and notes by the band. This is deeply fried material, perfectly capturing the obscurantism that characterized much of the 80s DIY cassette scene.

TRACKLIST

Yarom Lalou

Pellucidar

Neoplastie

Opium

Echereman

Ovan Iii

Bio Berim

Be Mafu

Gutta Percha Ii

Tibetan Cowboy

Glassy Stare

Atal Matal Toutoule

Apnee

Baby Sex

Yek!

Alternative Fresh

Divane

Djostodjou

LISTEN

Available on Desktop & Mobile

FEATURES

2xLP pressed on Black Vinyl

DESCRIPTION

Double LP version. "Cybernetic disco maestro Patrick Cowley graces Dark Entries once again with Hard Ware, an LP of far-out funk and synthpop celebrating what would have been Cowley's 75th birthday. Best known for his chart-topping disco anthems, Cowley left the world with an incredible body of work before his tragic death in 1982 due to AIDS-related illness. Since 2009, Dark Entries has been working with Cowley's friends and family to uncover the singular artist's lesser-known sides, including his soundtracks for gay pornographic films, which the label chronicled on compilation albums School Daze, Muscle Up, and Afternooners. Hard Ware presents the closing chapter in a trilogy of unreleased Cowley dancefloor bangers that began with 2022's heavy-hitting Male Box and was continued with the soul and garage-inflected From Behind in 2024. The most expansive release in said trilogy, Hard Ware delivers ten tracks of pure, uncut Cowley: sultry, psychedelic, sarcastic, and just a bit sleazy. Cowley devotees will delight in 'Tech-No,' a sparse instrumental demo version of his epically dystopian 'Tech-No-Logical World.' You could soundtrack your next aerobics session with cheeky numbers like 'Pajama Party Massacre' or 'Shake It Up,' both of which feature Cowley himself on vocals. The frenetic 'Big Ass in Motion' is built around samples from Rudy Ray Moore and The Madam's infamous Sensuous Black Woman, an X-rated comedy record that would later feature in classic booty house records. Mid-tempo cosmic groovers are well-represented with jams like 'Hellfire' and 'Megablue,' which perfectly capture Cowley's bathhouse-in-outerspace sensibilities. No collection of Cowley's work would be complete without an interstellar floor-filler, and there's quite a few here, like 'Jungle Jump,' which pits whirling beats with dub-laced swirls of synth, or 'Spellbinding Lover,' a Donna Summer-indebted melancholic boogie masterpiece that features Sylvester backup singer Jeanie Tracy. Hard Ware closes with the chilling synth-hymn 'Ice Age,' in which Loverde vocalist Peggy Gibbons sings of a coming frosty apocalypse. The story told in 'Ice Age' mirrors the coming AIDS crisis and feels like a haunting premonition from Cowley. The record comes in a sleeve with a hand-airbrushed circuitboard-inspired design by Gwenaël Rattke, and includes lyrics as well as liner notes by Andrew Ryce and Peggy Gibbons. Hard Ware is another crucial document of a tremendous talent taken too soon."

TRACKLIST

Hellfire

Tech-No

Spellbinding Lover Feat. Although Cowley tragically passed from AIDS-related illness in 1982, he left an extensive archive of unreleased tapes, many of which Dark Entries has had the honor of releasing. While working as a lighting technician at The City, SFs disco cabaret, Cowley saw rising star Frank Loverde perform. Cowley asked Loverde to contribute vocals to some material in progress, and Frank, Linda Imperial, and Peggy Gibbons joined Cowley in the studio. The resulting songs included "Kickin In," a 9-minute cybernetic disco stormer that taps into the essence of Cowleys hi-NRG sound: equal parts spaced out and zoned in on the dancefloor. In May 1978 Cowley joined Loverde on stage at The City to perform "Kickin In" as they opened for disco diva Sylvester. "Kickin In" was initially released in 2015 via Honey Soundsystem who found the tapes in the basement of Megatone Records owner John Hedges. This newly remastered version was made possible due to the discovery of the original multi-track recordings of "Kickin In," allowing for a fresh mixdown by Jim Hopkins as well as the creation of a new instrumental version. Also included are two impeccably sleazy Cowley jams recorded in 1980, "Thief of Love" and "Make It Come Loose." Cowley narrates excerpts from his erotic journals on these raunchy slow-burners, capturing the vibe of SFs leather bars and backrooms. "Thief of Love" features frequent Cowley collaborator Paul Parker on background vocals. This reissue of Kickin In includes features an illustration by Gwenaël Rattke that originally appeared Cowleys erotic journal, Mechanical Fantasy Box, as well as a postcard with lyrics. "Patrick parted the veil and entered a dark world of forbidden vices, wondrous musical panoramas and bold, strident, hopeful possibilities. Veteran musician Luis Gutierrez has spent the past two decades touring in bands, running Lalalandia Studio, and building his practice in Oakland and Guadalajara. But now, for his first solo outing, he has become Edgar, a pop star who knows no limits! "Edgar feels mightier than anyone but is always reduced to his vices" says Gutierrez, and Pavor delivers vices in spades. From the opening salvos of "Otra Agua," it's clear we're in for a wild ride: seasick synths slide along slamming disco beats, menacingly chanted vocals sit amid a flurry of careening horror movie samples. The mischief does not abate as we're guided through a demented funhouse of genre detournements. Edgar puts his indelible fingerprints over every inch of this vinyl, from uptempo numbers like the spooky chip-tune frenzy of "Nunca Mas" to the twisted cumbia of "Panteon." We're even treated to a fairly faithful (and majestic) Spanish-language cover of Amanda Lear's "Follow Me," here titled "Sigueme." EBM, space disco, and horror movie soundtracks all find their way into the mix on Pavor, but the diverse palette comes together perfectly, like a Yello album for the 21st century. Pavor comes housed in a sleeve designed by Eloise Shir-Juen Leigh and features a photograph by Izaak Schlossman. Also included is an insert with lyrics and notes. On Pavor, Edgar brings us a healthy dose of pure excess, reminding us that dread can be a hell of a lot of fun.

TRACKLIST

Otra Agua

Teoria

Panteon

Pavor

La Cuca

Rostro

Sigueme

La Tez

Lechuga

Nunca Mas

Te Amo

LISTEN

Available on Desktop & Mobile
